By now you may know that myself and Blake both decided to go for the platinum trophy. While it wasn’t a race (I lost that anyway) we thought it could be fun to have a friendly competition using the in-game leaderboards that pop up all the time when you play. If you go into the Social Hub section of the pause menu you can then compare your scores, times and whatever else the game decides to track with your friends. The rules were simple: whoever was ahead in the most leaderboards by the time the second person gets the platinum wins. There’s nothing at stake and it was purely designed to have a bit more fun with an already very fun game.
As mentioned, Blake got the trophy on Thursday evening. I got it at 5am on Saturday morning. So, who won the ultimate Sleeping Dogs showdown of ultimate destiny? We both did because it allowed us to play more of a game we enjoy so very, very much (we’ll both be reviewing the game as well so look out for that). In terms of a score though, let’s go through every leaderboard for the stats that SD tracks. Starting with
OVERALL – STU 89 – 93 BLAKE
Overall is based on gold awards given out for meeting gold medal criteria. Really this should have been an equal footing but Stu not only rushed the Zodiac tournament but because that unlocked his platinums it meant he couldn’t go back to collect the rest of the statues or get medals for the props award. Blake fully completed the game.
FLUID STRIKER – STU 55 – 59 BLAKE
Moved such as vault disarming, vault shooting etc. This one gave Stu a lot of trouble to unlock (and then he didn’t realise he had unlocked it so shot over the target of 50). Blake goes 2 up.
HEADHUNTER – STU 443 – 429 BLAKE
Stu gets on the board with this award for total headshots. Honestly, Stu wouldn’t have got this if it wasn’t for the fact he replayed several missioned at the end to get his Triad level up to 10 also Stu doesn’t know why he is speaking in third person when he is clearly the one writing this.
LUCKY SHOOTER – STU 11 – 16 BLAKE
Stu’s not so lucky – this one is for blind fire kills and Blake just has more finesse when it comes to blindly shooting from behind cover. 1-3.
FIRESTARTER – STU 176 – 173 BLAKE
A hotly contested one – and another one that Stu only won by virtue of having to replay a bunch of missions. This one is for explosive kills but it was so close they’re both firestarters, twisted firestarters. 2-3.
SNIPER – ????
It won’t show Blake’s score on Stu’s side of things, we think Blake might have won this though so she gets the point. I told ya, this is a friendly competition. 2-4.
GUNMAN – STU 866 – 663 BLAKE
Kills with guns. Stu is a bit of a maniac by the looks of things. 3-4.
NINJA – STU 13 – 12 BLAKE
Stealth kills! Stu squeaks it by one to tie it up. 4-4.
BONEBREAKER – STU 234 – 126 BLAKE
If anyone has ever watched Stu play this game you’ll know that his go to move is the leg break into stun strike. Those poor legs never stood a chance. 5-4.
ENVIRONMENTALIST – STU 141 – 142 BLAKE
Blake ties things up again – this is awarding those who perform environmental kills (e.g. throwing someone into an ice chipper, or onto the upturned head of a swordfish etc). 5-5.
HANDYMAN – STU 243 – 121 BLAKE
Melee weapon kills. Many unfortunate souls were stabbed and slashed on the way to Stu getting the platinum trophy. 6-5.
DISARMING – STU 84 – 61 BLAKE
Both of us can disarm you with a smile, but that doesn’t work in this game (would probably work on the Eye Toy version though). Stu removed more arms and is probably linked to how much he used the vault disarm for the fluid striker award. 7-5
DEFENDER – STU 1101 – 1143 BLAKE
Blake countered Stu’s attempts to win this one by countering more enemy attacks on her Wei to victory. 7-6.
FAST TALKER – STU 20 – 17 BLAKE
Certain missions have you press Triangle to talk to someone more efficiently. Stu replayed a mission where you have to do this, otherwise this would have been a tie. 8-6.
DEADEYE – STU 10 – 34 BLAKE
This is for killing enemies by throwing melee weapons at them. Fun fact: Stu didn’t know how to do this until the very end of the game. Blake wins. 8-7.
MARTIAL ARTIST – STU 1129 – 1202 BLAKE
Total melee kills. Stu is more GUN-ho and Blake is more kick, punch, dead. 8-8.
ENFORCER – STU 2042 – 1891 BLAKE
Total enemy kills. Between them almost four thousand virtual people lost their lives. We’d mourn but literally every one deserved it. 9-8.
SAFE DRIVER – STU 2:43:07 – 1:54:17 BLAKE
This is the total time spent driving cleanly above a certain speed. The ‘Clean Drive’ award later on was one of the most contested awards of this series. This might contribute to why both participants spent hours driving safely in Sleeping Dogs. 10-8.
RECKLESS DRIVER – STU 0:54:04 – 0:41:37 BLAKE
On the other hand this one is for driving full throttle in a Class A car. By the time one is available, Stu only ever drives in Class A cars which helped here. What a Class A gentleman. 11-8.
HIJACKER – STU 53 – 39 BLAKE
One of the coolest moves in the game is the ability to jump out of your car on top of another and hijack it. It’s cool as heck. 12-8.
WRECKER – STU 135 – 129 BLAKE
Total cars wrecked. Both Stu and Blake would kill it in a demolition derby (it being their own car). 13-8.
RACER – STU 24 – 20 BLAKE
HOWEVER, Stu’s score includes races won on a previous playthrough and while Blake had also played a little bit on the PS4 before it doesn’t count because her username changed. So really this should have been 20-20. So that’s how it’s gonna be. 14-9.
MOGUL – STU $9,808,169 – $9,241,760 BLAKE
Who can earn the most money? It turns out Stu is the capitalist scum and no one is more disappointed in Stu than Stu for that. 15-9.
BIG SPENDER – STU $6,814,972 – $5,231,844 BLAKE
I don’t have an explanation for this, the only thing I can think of is Stu bought more cars before acquiring the discount than Blake but this seems a little…off. 16-9.
GAMBLER – STU $1,001,000 – $1,045,000 BLAKE
Blake wins but I am more upset at mine looking like that. It’s not even symmetrical, it’s not even, where did that $1,000 even come from? It’s kinda ew. Well done Blake though. 16-10.
COMPLETIONIST – STU 100 – 100 BLAKE
I mean, to get the platinum you need to 100% the game. So this is a draw. 17-11.
EXPLORER – STU 187 – 187 BLAKE
I mean, to get the platinum you need to collect everything. So this is a draw. 18-12.
SURVIVOR – STU 1:14:23 – 0:41:30 BLAKE
Total time survived at a heat level beyond 1 (think GTA’s wanted level). Stu spent more time with the police on his tail which is annoying please don’t tread on my tail. 19-12.
ROGUE COP – STU 102 – 50 BLAKE
This is for cops killed. Yeah. Let’s move on. 20-12.
PUBLIC ENEMY – STU 355 – 200 BLAKE
Most kills in one play session. Stu is a maniac. I’d be scared to know him if it wasn’t for the fact that I am him (which means I can’t escape). 21-12.
SMASHING SUCCESS – STU 6 – 51 BLAKE
Number of enemies thrown into Zodiac Island combat props. Stu dropped the ball but Blake then threw an enemy into that ball multiple times on her way to winning this award. 21-13.
STATUESQUE – STU 8 – 12 BLAKE
Zodiac Island has it’s own collectibles in Fire Opal Statues. Blake found them all. Stu only found eight. What an idiot. Everyone point and laugh at Stu. 21-14.
These are more single achievements. This is where some of the more interesting battles took place.
CAR JUMP – STU 76.38m – 73.06m BLAKE
For AGES Stu struggled to beat Blake’s score. One lucky jump is all it took. 22-14.
BIKE JUMP – STU 70.88m – 117.04m BLAKE
Stu can’t fathom how Blake got that big of a jump. Where was it? Answer me, the people (me) needs to know! 22-15.
LONGEST WHEELIE – STU 0:22.622 – 1:03.930 BLAKE
Did Blake really wheelie for over a minute? Yes, she wheelie did! 22-16.
HIGH SPEED RUN – STU 1:19.036 – 0:41.809 BLAKE
All out speed on a Class A motorcycle. Stu just about dodged enough traffic while going at 2,000mph that he snatches the victory in this one. 23-16.
VEHICLE TAKEDOWN STREAK – STU 37 – 20 BLAKE
If you press SQUARE while driving in a car you can do a takedown by ramming your car into another car. You can repeatedly do this even to the same car twice or even three times. This is how Stu won. 24-16.
CLEAN DRIVE – STU 6:36.544 – 3:17.230 BLAKE
THIS WAS THE ONE. This is the most common one to pop up while just driving since it does so after five seconds of not crashing. It’s actually harder than it sounds – you can slow down too much or the timer ends. You cannot touch ANYTHING or the timer ends. If a car crashed into a lampost and that lampost barely scratches your exhaust pipe? The timer ends.
Blake took an early lead with a good score of 2:16 (roughly, I don’t remember the actual times) but Stu struck ahead with 2:32. But then Blake smashed that out of the way with her top score of 3:17.230. Stu struggled to get past that, once coming in at 3:16. However, with some perseverance and a van that was fast enough to trigger the Clean Drive but slow enough to make it easier to maneuver (and about twenty minutes of failing) he finally pulled out a time better than 3:17. Then kept going.
And going until an errant move caused him to hit a cone ending his time at over 6 and a half minutes. Truly the greatest moment in motorsporting history. 25-16.
HIT AND RUN – STU 75 – 42 BLAKE
This is another one that went back and forth, but as we’ve learned today, Stu has that homicidal tendencies when it comes to this game and thus he wins the secret prize – an old copy of Simpsons: Hit and Run that might not work anymore. 26-16.
PARKING METER PROFIT – STU $1656 – $1375 BLAKE
Yet another one that went back and forth. You get this one for running over a bunch of parking meters in a car and scooping up the pennies inside. 27-16.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN – STU 3:43.666 (spooky) – 3:10.648 BLAKE
If you need to know why Stu took much longer than Blake to get the platinum than it’s because he spent so much time messing around. Like here where the game tracks how long a police chase has been going on after twenty seconds. Stu not only spent more total time being chased by the police but also managed the longest single chase. 28-16.
KILL STREAK – STU 28 – 29 BLAKE
How many people can you kill in a short time? It ends after eight seconds without a new victim, so says the game. Blake takes this but honestly I don’t remember ever coming that close – it must have been an accident. 28-17.
TACKLES – STU 3 – 10 BLAKE
While sprinting you can press CIRCLE to tackle someone, You can chain this with multiple enemies to triggle this award. Blake tackles Stu out of the way to claim this one. 28-18.
FLYING JUMP KICK – STU 40 – 17 BLAKE
Same as Tackles but with the Flying Jump Kick you use SQUARE when sprinting. Stu loves this move. A little too much. 29-18.
HEADHUNTER – STU 11 – 6 BLAKE
Stu only got this when replaying missions but for the longest time he couldn’t get beyond five. 30-18.
TIREHUNTER – STU 80 – 69 (grow up) BLAKE
The DLC car with the turrets is amazing and I love it. This is for popping many, many tires in a short space of time. 31-18.
ROGUE COP – STU 28 – 5 BLAKE
Taking down police officers in a short space of time. Let’s move on. 32-18.
The first race doesn’t give me a score for Blake so it’s not counted here but Blake is the one with the most need for speed. She was fastest in eleven races leaving Stu furious at only being faster in eight of them. Add that to the total and it comes 40-29.
Stu wins but as a reminder, the aim of this was to have a bit of fun with the game. Sleeping Dogs is a very good game and you should definitely check it out. If you need more convincing, check out both mine and Blake’s upcoming reviews of the game to learn more about our thoughts.
We’ll likely be doing more platinum “races” that are not races in the future because this is fun.
